“Aromatherapy can be defined as the controlled use of essential oils to maintain and promote physical, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing.”
Gabriel Mojay
“Aromatherapy is a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and to restore lost balance to mind, body and soul.”
Robert Tisserand
Aromatherapy is a tool used in natural healing that utilizes natural plant extracts, including essential oils, hydrosols, and carrier oils, either topically or via inhalation to support the body, mind, and spirit. Aromatherapy is described as both science and art. It combines the scientific knowledge of the chemical constituents of the specific plants and oils with the art of blending those constituents together to make a beneficial blend for the individual purpose desired. These blends work with a synergistic (combined) effect that is beneficial for psychological, physical, emotional, and other medicinal purposes.
The use of essential oils helps the body to activate its own intrinsic healing ability at a cellular level, which allows the body to balance, repair, and restore itself ultimately leading to improved health. Essential oils can support all the body’s systems – immune, nervous, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, etc. whether used individually or in a synergistic blend.
Aromatherapy has been used since ancient times to perfume and heal the body. The ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks all used natural plant oils and extracts as part of cosmetic, medicinal, and religious practices. Modern aromatherapy is used primarily for holistic healing. Diffused oils or blends applied topically when mixed with a carrier oil are used for their therapeutic properties to support the mind, body, and spirit, returning the body to a state of equilibrium. Using essential oils as part of a natural home environment helps to reduce the toxic exposure to artificial chemicals in our lives on a daily basis.
